Multiple options. Motorway (amber) is longest (240km) and fastest (2 hours 40 min). Much less traffic using Kesselberg (race track) or Vorderriss (scenic route). Both are roughly same length (218+15 km) and time (over 4 hours).
Einsiedeleihof
4 bedrooms, 120 sqm, 178 Eur – cancel before 20.Apr Map – Leave after work. Depending on how early we get on the road, driving time between 2:40 and 4:00 (scenic).
Day 2 – Mantova
The Route
Riding via Sarche (green route) takes us across the Jaufenpass, which is open most of the year, except when it actually snows.
If it does, we’ll have to go to Bozen on the motor way. Boring!
After the Jaufenpass, we get into Meran (no way around it). We then have several alternatives into Trentino, via Gampenjoch or a small back road
Up to minute 2:15, you actually see Jaufenpass, Trentino, Molvenosee, the hairpins to Sarche and the supermarket in Sarche around Easter.
Things should look pretty much the same when we come.
Passing by the Molvenosee offers nice views to the Brenta Group, a set of quite dramatic mountains.
A set of haripins takes us down to Sarche. The supermarket in town is a regular watering hole on our easter trips.
The Purple route takes us up Monte Bondone and on some very small roads along Lago di Cei to Loppio, near Lake Garda.
The video up until 3:06 shows this route the other way round.
Driving on Monte Baldone (similar name) will be very small road – a challenge to navigate. We get down into the valley where the blue route offers a quick dash to Mantova.
If all goes well, we take “Bergrennstrecke” up and go through the Lessinische Berge before we take the motor way into Mantova.
Baldone and Lessinische Berge a shown on the video until minute 1:20, driving the other way.
The Appartment
Casa Iolanda
3 bedrooms plus living room, 130 sqm, 181.47 Eur – cancel before 1.March – only sleeps 6!
Mantova being in the middle of the big flat around river Po, we take the motor way to Modena. Entering the Apenine mountains, we’ll be on very small, twisty roads.
As most roads are going north-east to south-west and us trying to go diagonal to it, navigation will be tricky. It will also be slow progress, but fun!
Crossing the motor way
at Sasso Marconi, we can either take the dash to the appartment on the motor way or take the twisties across Apenine including some local race tracks.
If we feel like it, we can go to the Mugello (official) race track, see what’s going on.
The Appartment

Day 5 – near Gran Sasso
Monday 4.May and Tuesday 5.May
The Route
Serious fun, today. I espect the road to get interesting right after we leave town. There is plenty of variations to get even the tireless tired.
The road to Passo Spugna and surrounding passes seem to me to be the longest road fun I’ve ever had. We even slowed down at the end, cause we felt we’d had it…
We need to see how much progress we make. The easternmost route may be too long and we may fall back to the blue one to Perugia. As you can see, we drove into the night last time we went there.
The Appartment
Villa Pina
2x 2 bedroom house, 2×90 sqm, 405 Eur – Cancel before 27.Apr
I’m sure there will be no riding on the day in Rome. Just sight seeing!
Day 9 – Tuscany
The Route
Unless the weather is really nasty, we should take the green route.
The part before Siena is visiting the 7 most photographed spots
in the Crete Senesi… what we know as Tuscany from pictures. So have your cameras (iPhones) ready.
The green and amber routes are what we will do unless something presses us to take the motor way.
The green part is a nice piece of Tuscany and a slow going part of Apennine.
John and Gordo will remember the area north of Vicenza as shown in the first 30 seconds of this film. We go the lake you look down on from Kaiserjaegersteig.
The Appartment
Relax al lago

Day 11 – Erding
Sunday 10.May
The Route
I hope we still like biking enough by that time to go via Passo Manghen and Lavazzejoch. Not sure if Penser Joch will be open, but we shall see. Otherwise we have to take the motor way from Trento to Brenner.
Sabine still remembers narrow Passo Manghen (up to 3:30 min on the video). Need to check if is open.
From Brenner, we also have many options, but suspect we might take the fastest one.
All points mentioned here are in the .gpx file provided. Day tours are split into segments, which offer alternatives and fall back to a fast track to the appartment.
D02 stands for the fastest route. D02-1 for the first alternative segment, etc.
